Major Gifts Job Description

Our research shows that individuals suited to this role are even-tempered, goal oriented, outgoing, and good coalition builders.

Major Gifts fundraisers network with board members, executive directors, volunteers, and staff to identify potentially significant supporters. They meet directly with prospects and current donors to cultivate their interest, build relationships and to solicit contributions. They often partner with volunteers and senior executives in this process. They are often the primary liaison between the donor and the organization.

Major Gift professionals also manage top-level fundraising programs which secure donations from individuals, foundations and corporations. They work with researchers, database managers, event planners and public relations colleagues with the goal of keeping close contact with existing supporters and increasing their numbers. They also interact with service and program staff to develop funding proposals for donors.

These are pivotal positions that, when staffed successfully, can make an enormous difference in the fortunes of a nonprofit organization.
